The concept of “well-being” as it pertains to health came out of the United Nations where some countries included it in their definition of optimal health. I became aware of this reality around 2004 as a consultant on an integrated physical and mental health project. The majority of recent research in this area comes from a Global perspective. I can easily cite Australia, South Korea, Canada as well as the United States.
Virginia Tech University uses a Gallup, Inc. definition of community well-being:
“The interaction and interdependence between many aspects of life, such as finding fulfillment in daily work interactions, having strong social relationships, and access to the resources people need, feeling financially secure, being physically healthy, and taking part in a true community.” The Tech Team added emotional well-being to more specifically define their mission to better align the personal goals and strengths of people working together.
In South Korea, the Community Wellbeing Research Center was funded by the Social Science Korea Program to "promote research and development that can provide a vision for the next 50 years of Korean society”. They emphasized the optimal objective to include multidisciplinary research and cross-cultural collaborations and established an organization that would serve as a hub for collaborations and connections among community well-being scholars, practitioners and citizens.
Members of the Association of Health Centers in Ontario, Canada felt that concentrating solely on health gave them a limited view and they decided to launch the initiative, intended for everyone called, “Shift the Conversation: Community Health and Wellbeing”. They developed the Canadian Index of Wellbeing, which was intended to expand vistas beyond health care to include Income, Education, Housing, and Labor Force Activity.
African Americans, or Kemetic Descendants Living in America (we all carry the DNA), and/or American Descendants of Slaves (ADOS) can present a more focused activity for Change Agent Interventions as together, we plan and execute projects to “Save-Our-Selves”. Social Solutions Groups in each county, city, town, village, or community can target an area for change and work that objective to a satisfactory conclusion. Every six months re-examine the effectiveness of the activities. Then you have an opportunity to change strategies and improve on the work. There are truly enough skilled persons in your own Geographic Area to make this happen, OR, We can arrange to conduct Social Solutions Skills Camps to guide your Social Solutions Group in executing your plan.
